FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DID YOU COME TO KNOW JESUS AS YOUR SAVIOR?
I am told that I chose to follow Jesus at the age of three. My Grandmother tells me that I knelt down at the side of her bed and asked Jesus to come into my life. I have no memory of that day, but I have no doubt that God began working in my life at a very early age. I come from a family of very strong believers going back for many generations. I am very blessed. However, during my high school years, I still found a way to rebel and give my parents all sorts of grief. Thankfully, a Young Life Leader named Otis noticed me and took an interest in my life. He cared for me and showed me Christ’s love.
One day, after I had spent a few months making really poor decisions, Otis picked me up to bring me to his house. He parked his grey 1992 Toyota Pickup Truck, looked over at me, and said, “Josh, what are you doing?” With those words, my heart broke. He didn’t need to preach a sermon or give an altar call. I knew that I was lost and that I needed Jesus. With tears in my eyes, we talked about how I need to follow Jesus for real.
From that day, everything changed.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY? HOW DOES YOUR WIFE FEEL ABOUT BEING A PASTOR’S WIFE?
One of the best things I have going for me as a Pastor is that I married a wife who loves Jesus and loves the church. Beth was one of my first volunteers in ministry, so that means that we were doing ministry together long before we were ever married or dating. One of the things that drew me to Beth is her deep love of people that is exhibited in her dedication and commitment to ministry. However, I must admit that one of the reasons that Beth is such an amazing Pastor’s wife is that she had an amazing pastor’s wife as a mom. Being married to a woman who was raised in a healthy Pastor’s home is a huge blessing. Dale & Becky Burke have been outstanding role models for us, and pretty awesome in-laws for myself. Now, we are just trying to do the best we can to be a healthy pastor’s home for our three kids. So far, they still love being pastor’s kids.
WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?
The gospel is the good news that Jesus is King and that he became King on the cross! It is the news "that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). This is the central claim of the Christian faith, the most important proclamation of the church, and the message that the world desperately needs to hear.
HOW DO YOU PREACH?
I preach God’s Word with passion and enthusiasm, because it is God’s Word is that has the power to change lives. I want to bring a passion for God’s Word that is equivalent to the power that it has. There is always a time for topical and doctrinal teaching, but I feel like I am at my best when I am preaching through the text. I love taking people into the cultural, historic, and religious context of the passage in order to understand the author’s motivations and meaning so that we can be confident of what it means for us today. There is nothing that I love more than seeing light bulbs go on in people’s heads when they hear God’s Word explained to them in a way that they can relate.
